As we steadily approach Christmas, we have to talk about one of New Zealand’s most famous icon: the Pohutukawa trees. These trees are one of the most beautiful trees in the the world as it has colours of a rose, and looks like a dandelion!
It blooms towards the start of summer (middle of November to start of December) and (hopefully) by Christmas the whole nation is covered by the red Pohutukawa. It as if Mother Nature has come bearing gifts for the festivities in Aotearoa.
Pohutukawa translates to “Sprinkle by Spray” as it is found abundantly in coastal areas. It is mainly found on the Northern Island and the largest Pohutukawa bush in the world is found on Rangitoto Island, where it grows on volcanic stones. The Pohutukawa trees bring a sea of joy and prosperity along with the bright red, wishing all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
